my beauty staples

If you follow any beauty blogs or vlogs, you have probably heard the question: If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have 5 beauty products with you, which ones would you choose? Setting aside the fact that beauty products would be the absolute last thing on my mind were I actually in that situation, it got me thinking. I went through all of my skincare and makeup products searching for those never-fail-me items that I can't (well, don't want to) live without. The following 5 products are my tried-and-true beauty staples, some of which I have been using religiously for years. At this point in my life I have come to rely on these products as an integral part of my skincare and make-up routine. Let's have a look!

First up is my Olay Complete all day moisturizer for combination/oily skin. When it comes to skincare I get bored easily, so I love to mix it up and experiment with new products. However, I have used and loved this moisturizer almost exclusively since I first discovered it as a freshman in college (about 7 years ago... yikes!). The few times that I did stray away over the years to try something new,  I quickly ended up going back. This product is perfect for my oily skin because it leaves my face soft and supple without causing any excess oil. It is also one of the few moisturizers that doesn't cause me to break out.

Second is my Bioderma Crealine H2O cleansing water. I first tried this cleanser last summer (about 9 months ago) and it quickly has become a staple in my routine. I don't use this everyday, but I do use it multiple times a week for a number of different  purposes. First, I use it to remove my make-up before I cleanse. I have found that this works beautifully for removing even waterproof eye make-up without tugging my skin. I also prefer it over make-up wipes which can irritate my skin if I use them too much. I also love using Bioderma as a way to refresh my face between washes. I generally wash my face twice a day, and sometimes use Bioderma mid-day (generally only during the warmer months) to lightly cleanse and freshen up my skin without stripping it due to over-washing. I also use it as a convenient way to cleanse my face on long car or airplane rides (I usually empty some of it into a more travel-friendly container). Lastly, I occasionally use it when I feel too sick or tired to wash my face at night, but don't want to go to bed without some sort of cleansing. To use, I pour some of the product onto a cotton square and swipe over my skin. If I am using it to remove make-up, I generally use 1 cotton square per eye, and 1-2 over the rest of my face.

Third is my Missha Perfect Cover B.B. Cream in no. 21. I first discovered this B.B. cream when I was in Korea about 3 years ago. This was before B.B. creams had made their way to the U.S., so my trip to Korea was the first chance I had to try them out. I had bought a few different ones to test out, but immediately fell head-over-heels for the Missha Perfect Cover. After using it once, I ran back out a bought two more in case I couldn't find it in the U.S. Luckily, Missha now has a U.S. website and I have also been able to find it at H Mart (a Korean market). I love this B.B. cream because it feels lightweight on the skin but has amazing coverage. It makes my skin look dewy and youthful, without looking oily, and has never made me break out. When I wear it with powder, it lasts all day and I don't have any problems with it slipping, even in humid weather. When I first bought it, there were only two shades (21 and 23), but since then they have added a wider selection. I find that no. 21 fits me perfectly and doesn't oxidize or make me look ashy.

Fourth is my Urban Decay Naked Palette. I am sure that anybody reading this is probably very familiar with this palette (and most likely already owns one), so I will be brief. For me, this is the quintessential neutral eye-shadow palette and it has seen more use that all of my other palettes combined. I have a warm complexion, so I find that the original Naked palette fits my skin tone much better than the second, and the colors are more wearable for me than the third. Over the past two years this has been my go-to palette as it contains all the shades I need to create any neutral eye look. I also use the color Buck to fill in my brows. Overall, I find the shadows to be smooth, creamy and highly pigmented. I notice a little fall-out with some of the more shimmery shades, but I find it easy to sweep away with a large, fluffy brush. I think this palette is well worth the money and I recommend anyone who hasn't tried it to check it out!

Lastly is my all-time favorite mascara - Maybelline the Rocket Volume Express in Waterproof. Simply put, this is the only mascara that I can get to stay put on my eyes. I don't know what it is, but all other mascara formulas flake terribly on me and leave me with raccoon eyes. I notice a slight bit of flaking with this one if I wear it all day, but it is nothing that I can't easily touch up. I love how thick and black this formula leaves my lashes and I find it to be wearable enough for day, but buildable enough to achieve a dramatic night-time look.

What are your staple beauty products?
